On Google’s 25th anniversary, Sundar Pichai commits Google’s future with AI

On Google’s 25th anniversary, Chief Executive Sundar Pichai has declared that artificial intelligence is “the most significant technological transformation” in our generation. He emphasized that integrating AI into various products will be the “most crucial approach” for Google to fulfill its mission.
Google, founded by Stanford graduates Sergei Brin and Larry Page, initially aimed to “organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and valuable.”
“In the course of time, AI will represent the most substantial technological transformation within our lifetimes,” Pichai articulates in a recent blog post. “It goes beyond the shift from desktop computing to mobile devices and has the potential to surpass the importance of the internet itself. It constitutes a foundational reconfiguration of technology and a remarkable catalyst for human creativity.”
Machine learning, which involves supplying extensive computing power and data to software systems to build brain-like networks capable of surpassing the constraints of human intelligence and memory, is poised to bring about a transformation across all realms of human activity. This spans from forecasting stock price fluctuations to generating artistic creations.
It’s noteworthy that one of the primary sectors AI is anticipated to challenge is Google’s lucrative domain – search.
At present, the process of locating answers to questions entails two steps: firstly, conducting a search on a platform like Google, and secondly, navigating individual websites presented in the search results to manually find the answer.
Nonetheless, various AI engines, with OpenAI’s ChatGPT being a notable example, pledge to significantly streamline the aforementioned procedure, condensing it into a single-step process: Pose the question within the chat interface and receive an instant answer, all without the need to visit any external websites.
The AI engine takes on the responsibility of accessing third-party websites, extracting information, filtering, processing, evaluating, and determining its relevance to your query, thereby relieving the user from these tasks.
However, search is merely one of the domains that will undergo profound disruption. Advanced and highly proficient learning models will render many of the existing human “jobs” and means of sustenance obsolete.
For instance, AI can now autonomously create imaginative posters, potentially displacing poster artists from their roles. Additionally, it exhibits the capability to diagnose diseases with greater precision than many, if not most, medical professionals, and can formulate more effective legal strategies compared to what numerous lawyers currently conceive.
Furthermore, it’s not limited to white-collar professions facing jeopardy. Within the upcoming five years, AI is projected to attain sufficient intelligence and accessibility to potentially supplant numerous blue-collar workers, including truck and taxi drivers, waitstaff, and janitors.
Returning to Google, Pichai stated that one of his initial objectives upon assuming the role of CEO at the Mountain View, California-based firm was to transform Google into an “AI-first company.”
“Google has been dedicated to AI investment since its early stages. We were among the pioneers to incorporate machine learning into our products, commencing in the early 2000s. This was employed for tasks like enhancing spelling corrections, improving ad quality, and providing suggestions and recommendations.”
He recounted one of his most impactful experiences with AI, which occurred 11 years ago when he observed a demonstration by Google’s research team. They had successfully harnessed machine learning and neural networks to achieve what human programmers had deemed impossible: automating image recognition.
Pichai highlighted that Google has pioneered numerous innovations that have propelled AI to reach greater heights.
“We unveiled Tensor Processing Units, or TPUs, which delivered impressive performance improvements, ranging from 30x to 80x, in the field of machine learning compared to other hardware options available at the time. In 2017, we published our seminal Transformer paper, establishing the neural network architecture that serves as the cornerstone for the majority of today’s generative AI and large language models,” he explained.
He mentioned that Google is incorporating generative AI into various products, including the newly introduced Search Generative Experience (SGE) and the “Help Me Write” feature within Gmail.
Simultaneously, Pichai noted that Google is cognizant of the potential risks associated with the improper use of this technology.
