‘Mission Raniganj’ Story: Based on True Event
Raniganj Coalmine, situated in the Paschim Bardhaman district of West Bengal, holds historical significance as it marked the inception of coal mining in India. Discovered in 1774 by John Sumner and Suetonius Grant Heatly of the East India Company, they were granted a license by Lord Warren Hastings to mine coal.
This marked the first chapter of coal mining in the country. Formal mining operations commenced in 1820 under Alexander & Co, and for most of the 19th and 20th centuries, Raniganj stood as India’s primary coal producer.
During this era, mining was conducted haphazardly due to industrial underdevelopment and colonial rule. There were no support pillars for mine ceilings and walls, leading to the complete exhaustion of coal veins to maximize resource extraction. Miners faced constant peril from cave-ins and collapses.
A tragic event occurred on November 13, 1989, when a series of blasts triggered by miners caused a wall in an adjacent underground area to crack, leading to flooding. Six miners lost their lives, and 65 became trapped due to a cave-in. The water level rapidly rose, and the unstable mine structure complicated rescue efforts.
In a moment of desperation, Yashwant Singh Gill, a courageous young mining engineer from IIT Dhanbad, devised a remarkable solution. He designed a six-foot-tall iron capsule with a 21-inch diameter and lowered it into the pit through a newly drilled borehole.
Employing a 12-tonne crane, Gill meticulously rescued each of the 65 trapped miners one by one. This extraordinary rescue operation, witnessed by over 2,000 people, concluded within six hours, thanks to Gill’s intelligence and heroism.
Gill’s actions left an indelible mark, and every year on November 16, Coal India celebrates Rescue Day to honor his bravery. In recognition of his heroic act, the then President of India, Ramaswamy Venkataraman, awarded him the Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak, highlighting his exceptional courage and selflessness.
