Chandramukhi 2: Movie Storyline

‘Chandramukhi 2’ adopts its storyline from its predecessor, which was originally a remake of Mohanlal and Shobana’s ‘Manichithrathazhu’. In this narrative, the daughter of Radhika Sarathkumar elopes with her husband, incurring the anger of her family. Given that it’s an intercaste marriage, she receives no support from her own side.

Tragically, a fatal accident claims the lives of her daughter and son-in-law, leaving behind two children. Pandian (played by Raghava Lawrence) takes on the responsibility of caring for them.

Radhika’s family has been enduring a series of unfortunate events in their lives. Consequently, a spiritual guru advises them to make a pilgrimage to their ancestral deity and perform a sacred ritual. To make this ritual effective, they must also include their grandchildren. The family embarks on a journey to the Vettaiyapuram palace, notorious for its dark history.

It’s the very place where Ganga (portrayed by Jyotika) battled split-personality disorder, assuming the persona of Chandramukhi, a dancer. This palace, owned by Vadivelu, is haunted by the restless spirits of Chandramukhi and Pandian. The unfolding events involving Radhika and her family compose the core of the narrative.

‘Chandramukhi’ is a tale that continues to linger vividly in the memories of many. It boasts a substantial fanbase, largely owing to the exceptional performances delivered by Rajinikanth and Jyotika. Back in 2005, the film emerged as one of the top-grossing Tamil movies and was subsequently adapted into several languages.

Chandramukhi 2 Movie Review

The decision to craft a sequel in 2023 and further expand the franchise raises valid questions. The adage, “We should not tamper with classics,” is a sentiment echoed by numerous filmmakers.

In this instance, P. Vasu not only revisited the classic but also failed to inject any originality into a storyline that harks back to 2005. Considering it’s now 2023, envisioning Raghava Lawrence and Vadivelu rehashing the same slapstick comedy from the original film is quite a disappointment.

Humor played a pivotal role in the predecessor, but in this sequel, you only manage to elicit occasional laughs, mostly due to Vadivelu. Otherwise, the humor largely falls short of expectations.

The dialogues come across as underdeveloped. Lawrence delivers lines like “I’m Pandian, the guardian of these two children” with an abundance of style. If this is the established pattern for the dialogue, it sets a clear tone for the rest of the movie.

‘Chandramukhi 2’ also adheres to the formula of “5 songs, 3 fights,” a template that feels forced onto a storyline that already resembles numerous horror comedies. The underlying issue here is that ‘Chandramukhi 2’ fails to fit neatly into either the horror or comedy genre.

P. Vasu’s efforts to evoke nostalgia from ‘Chandramukhi’ on several occasions ultimately result in a production that resembles a poorly executed television soap opera. In essence, the sequel is a rehash of ‘Chandramukhi’ featuring different actors, unimpressive visual effects, actors who overly exaggerate their performances, and lackluster music.

In the first half, Raghava Lawrence’s performance is excessively exaggerated, to the point that it can be quite overwhelming. On the other hand, Lakshmi Menon has a substantial role in the film and manages to deliver a commendable performance.

Kangana Ranaut, however, appears in an extended cameo, and her Bharatanatyam performance has faced criticism, which remains valid after viewing the film. Regrettably, there is no standout or exceptional acting from any member of the cast.
