The U.S. Bureau of Land Management, responsible for overseeing the area where the event occurred, stated, “Continuous rain in the past 24 hours has led to a need for a complete halt in vehicle movement on the playa.
Additionally, there is anticipated rainfall in the coming days, and conditions are unlikely to improve sufficiently to permit vehicle access to the playa.”
On Saturday afternoon, Paul Reder found his RV enveloped in dense, sticky mud, with sporadic patches of blue sky attempting to break through the overcast gray clouds overhead.
“Thankfully, we’re part of a relatively large camp stocked with plenty of provisions,” Reder conveyed during a video call with Reuters. “As a close-knit community, everyone actively shares resources with each other.”
Having attended the event for 22 years, Reder anticipated that it would take a minimum of two days for the area to dry up. Although he was ready to weather the situation, Reder noted that some participants were opting to leave the site by foot and make their way to the nearest highway.
According to organizers, Black Rock City received an estimated rainfall of over half an inch overnight.
According to the event’s website, over 60,000 attendees journey to and from the remote northwest Nevada area each year. They converge in the temporary city to create art, dance, and embrace the sense of community.
Local media, on the other hand, indicated that there were over 70,000 “burners” present in Black Rock City. The festival derives its name from the main event that concludes it, which involves the burning of a sizable wooden structure known as “the Man” on the second-to-last night.
